Hey! How’s your year going? How was your recent London trip?
Hello! London was incredible my second time visiting (same time as last year) during the heat wave so I think I always get the very best London has to offer haha. My year is going fabulous if I can be honest I’m experiencing so many validating moments. I’ve been dreaming all my life and I’m starting to look around, and seeing those dreams are becoming routine. What a miracle huh?
Take us back to your musical origins? What first made you want to pursue being an artist? Were there any key musical role models?
My first memories of music was always on the way to school. When my dad was deployed we took the bus so listening to what kids were mumbling through iPod playlists was how I heard new shit and when he came home it was listening to curated playlists from a solider returned. I grew up listening to all the greats of neo soul (Lauryn, Erykah, Jill Scott, India Arie etc) and also then the shit my dad was into or wanted us to be into (G. Love & the special sauce, No Doubt, Gorillaz, Yellow Card, the list is long lol). My grandparents also loooove music and the music they listened to in the 70s was always playing at family dinner so I’ve been submerged in sonics for as long as I can remember.
I started making music after trying theatre in high school and wanting to be the one to tell the story — my story.
Where did the apex of your sonic approach stem from? How has it changed and adapted over the years?
I’ve always wanted to share how I feel unabashedly without judgement from myself or others. I feel very deeply and differently every day haha so there’s lots to process and in my life not everyone has had space or desire to work through it with me so it’s been up to me to find the answers and the people who are willing to talk about it with me and that’s where I found my voice in song. That process hasn’t changed since the beginning but the result certainly has as I get older and more clear on what I want to say and why I want to say it.
How would you define your essence as a musician and artist?
I feel like the rebellious older sister that you watch fuck up her life, love, money, mindset you name it..and learn what not to do from. I feel proud and free in making mistakes and redirecting to keep myself safe and happy but I am by no means a role model or have any desire to put an “instruction manual” out so I make “what not to do” and “well have you considered this” music.
How do you reflect on your wider discography? Is there anything you’d do differently?
I’m proud to leave it all on the table every time. On the tracks and on the stage. anything I would do differently I note and change for the next time. I live in a place of reflection so the past is the one thing I know I can’t edit and for my sanity I don’t hold onto the idea of “what could have been” I swallow my L’s and plan for brighter. Grateful for any opportunity to be better even if that means a moment I wasn’t my best.
You shared “I Feel Different Every Day (Deluxe)” earlier this year — how do you reflect on the project?
I hold it near and dear to my heart. It’s special as all offerings of truth are but this one definitely was my attempt to lean in deeper. To myself and to my audience. I just want people to know my heart and my intentions in music and my why. I feel like I shared some intimate details of my story that really brought me closer to people who have had similar experiences and that’s the reason I make music so that to me is a huge success.
Why did you decide to a share a deluxe version? Why do you think so many artists are choosing to release extended versions of projects?
There’s always more to say haha I’m a professional yapper if you really think about it. I’m very much Ms. OH AND ANOTHER THING!!! So I wanted to add more context to the project and more emotion and feeling. I think artists are people who have been told to shut up and it’s soooo fucking liberating to not have any time limit on talking about the shit you realllyyyy believe is important so I think that’s why we add deluxes and remixes until you’re all deluxed and remixed out haha.
You’re renowned as a striking live performer. What informs your presence on the stage?
I have always been told I’m too much to handle or hear. It made me really performative and interested in how others feel about me despite and regardless of how I feel about myself. So now I sit really comfortably at the center of my life as an act of dedication. Now all my decisions and actions are my own and I think you can clearly see that in the way I carry and present myself.
When I get on stage I just follow my heart! There’s no curation or plan besides singing it all to the best of my ability. I like to push myself to connect bc it’s such a high honour people would choose to spend an evening and their hard earned money on supporting me. I always consider the energy in the room and try to give the people what they want! Sometimes that’s space to scream, sometimes that’s a message that’s sitting on my heart and all of the time it’s to release and work through our troubles and hardships very intentionally.
What are you up to for the rest of 2025?
I’m on what I’m always on! Seeking higher ground, getting quiet and waiting for Gods whisper. I’m making music with my friends and processing the bullshit of my world and the world around me. Just trying to make sense of it all and put it down somewhere.
What are your long-term goals?
I don’t have anything of importance to answer this question definitively really. I’m grateful for each and every day I get to be myself. I’ve been thinking of what I add to this world and I’m hoping honesty and a desire to be better than I was yesterday is enough to inspire others to do the same. I want to make music and make others feel safe in my presence. I want a stability i never experienced in love and life and home and self. I want to give as much as I receive and I hope in the wider, grander scheme of it all the people that knew me will be as proud to call me theirs as I am to call them mine.
Thanks so much for taking the time to curate these questions and give me another opportunity to set these things down. I want to say i think now more than ever it’s important to ask each other how feel so thank you for making the space for me.
